TDSB and Daily Bread partner to open up first-ever community meal program in high school

A new weekly meal program has opened in Sir Robert L. Borden Business and Technical Institute serving the Kingston/Galloway/Danzig neighbourhood, a result of an innovative partnership between the Toronto District School Board and Daily Bread Food Bank.

Students from Borden’s Culinary Program will plan, prepare and serve nutritious, hot meals with the additional help of a trainee from Daily Bread`s Food Services Training Program, and a number of Daily Bread’s cook instructors. At today’s launch, Daily Bread’s executive director, Gail Nyberg, and principal Anthony Hack joined students in welcoming the community.

“It`s a win-win situation for everyone. Daily Bread is able to open a program in an area that needs it. It`s a great educational opportunity as well as an opportunity for the students at Robert Borden to give back, and people struggling with hunger are able to get a nutritious meal,” said Gail Nyberg. “We hope that many other schools in Toronto will be able to see the benefit of providing educational opportunities for students at the same time as valuable services for their own communities.”

“Borden students and staff are very proud to be the first school to partner with Daily Bread to support our community,” said Anthony Hack, Principal, Sir Robert L. Borden BTI. “School should be about more than just learning from a textbook, and this opportunity allows students to take what happens in the classroom and make a real and relevant positive impact in the community.”
