Food Services Training Program

Daily Bread Food Bank offers a 16-week Food Services Training Program at its warehouse in South Etobicoke. Four professional cook instructors work with and train up to 10 trainees per session in an industrial size kitchen that operates both Daily Bread’s onsite cafeteria (serving 100-150 people, Monday to Friday) and a production room for prepared meals which are sent to member agency meal programs throughout the city (approx. 3000-4000 servings per week).

This program touches on the many basic aspects of the food services industry. There are training rotations in all of the following areas: cleaning of dishes, equipment and floors, ingredient preparation, agency meal production, cashier, cafeteria service, baking, and hot and cold meal production.

There is also a job search component to the program which assists trainees in résumé writing, interviewing skills, time, stress, and conflict management, and basic MS Word and Internet training. The job searching component is up to 12 hours per week and may vary according to the needs of the
trainee. It is unpaid, but will be an invaluable asset upon entering the workforce.

We are looking for participants who are:

  • Interested in a career in the food services industry
  • Facing barriers to employment and need some support entering the work force (for example: no recent or Canadian work experience)
  • Motivated to find work in the food services industry
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Available to work 24 hours per week. Paid Work – $11 per hour. Variable shifts between 8:30am and 4:00pm from Monday to Friday
  • Willing to participate in up to 12 hours per week of Job Skills Training
  • Fluent in speaking and reading English (ESL-Level 4)
  • Able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 40 lbs

Trainees participate in the Food Services Training Program for up to 16 weeks and Daily Bread Food Bank will assist them in securing permanent employment in the community when they are ready. Please note that permanent positions are not available at Daily Bread Food Bank following the program.

This program seeks trainees on an on-going basis. We are looking for individuals to work in our modern, well-equipped kitchen. Intake of trainees occurs on a regular basis, so there is no deadline for application.
