This is a one-year contract covering a maternity leave. The deadline for applications has been extended to Monday, September 13, 2010. For more information on this position or how to apply, click here.
Short-term changes recommended for welfare

The Social Assistance Review Advisory Council (SARAC) was appointed by the Government of Ontario and had a two-fold mandate: submit recommendations to the Minister of Community and Social Services regarding the scope and terms of reference for a review of Ontario's social assistance system and advise the Minister of Community and Social Services regarding possible short-term changes to social assistance rules that would improve the program for beneficiaries without adding substantial costs. The Council was chaired by Daily Bread Executive Director Gail Nyberg, and included Research Director Michael Oliphant. The full report was released in June 2010 and has recommendations for conducting a review of Ontario's income security system, focusing on six "strategies for reform." The short-term changes were originally submitted in February 2010. Four of the thirteen recommendations were announced by Minister Meilleur alongside the provincial budget in March 2010. Both reports can be downloaded here, including the Recommendations for Short Term Rule Changes for 2010.
Spread the Feeling Tour

UPDATE: Goal reached! Over 20,000 hugs have been given and over 20,000 jars of Kraft peanut butter will be donated to Daily Bread Food Bank as a result. Thank you to everyone who sent a virtual hug or came out to Ontario Place on Saturday to hug a bear. Having already hit Halifax and Quebec City, the Spread the Feeling Tour will be arriving in Toronto on Saturday July 24th with the Kraft Peanut Butter bears giving out free hugs at Ontario Place.  In exchange for every free hug, Kraft Peanut Butter will donate one 500 gram jar of peanut butter to Daily Bread Food Bank.  The goal this year is to raise 20,000 hugs and donate 20,000 jars of peanut butter. With donations down during the summer this is an easy and fun way to help out those in need in Toronto. The bears will be there from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. but if you can't make it down to Ontario Place on Saturday, you can also give a virtual hug to family and friends online at www.kraftpeanutbtter.com. For every hug given online, another jar of peanut butter will be donated.
Food bank usage in GTA continues to rise

Daily Bread Food Bank released early statistics from the annual survey of food bank clients across the Greater Toronto Area. Despite an improving economy, food banks in the GTA reported a 15 per cent increase in client visits, a new report from Daily Bread Food Bank finds. The Hunger Snapshot released today shows a total of 1,187,000 visits to food banks from April 2009 to March 2010. This is the largest one year increase since social assistance rates were cut 21.6 per cent in the mid-1990s. Find out more by clicking on the links below.
Daily Bread Food Bank presents:

Daily Bread Food Bank presents: At the Table... Why are so many people still using food banks when the economic crisis is nearing an end? What is the cause? Why should we still care about poverty? From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. next Thursday (June 3) , Daily Bread Food Bank is bringing together an economist, a food bank agency support worker and a member of the People's Review of social assistance for an enlightening, educating and though provoking discussion on these questions and more.  Space is limited. To register for a ticket to this free event, or to find out more, please click here: http://dailybreadatthetable.eventbrite.com.
Join the Hunger Challenge

Hunger Challenge 2010 In addition to the food donated during drives, Daily Bread also buys food to make up for any shortfalls in donations, and provide perishable items such as fresh fruits and vegetables in our hampers when possible. We challenge you to help us cover our food bill this summer by signing up your team or company and fundraising by clicking on the Hunger Challenge banner.  100% of funds raised will go towards purchasing eggs, tuna, fresh fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and hamper boxes.
