Daily Bread’s Holiday Drive has begun!

hpbanner-2016-holidaydriveDaily Bread’s Holiday Drive is on now and ends December 31. The money and food raised during the Holiday Drive helps Daily Bread provide food for almost 200 food programs across Toronto throughout the winter months.

Most people coming to a food bank are spending over 70 per cent of their income on housing costs, with less than $7 a day left over for everything else: warm clothing, transportation, medicine and food. Often, that’s not enough and hard choices have to be made – food on the table – or warm winter boots for your child? Over half of adults have skipped a meal in order to pay for something else, most often rent. Nutritious food becomes a luxury some people just can’t afford.

That’s where Daily Bread steps in to help. Daily Bread collects, purchases and distributes nutritious food out through a network of member agencies to those who need it most. From food banks to women’s shelters, drop-in programs or hostels for the homeless, Daily Bread helps to provide a basic necessity that 90,000 people across Toronto can’t afford. For every dollar donated to Daily Bread, Daily Bread can provide a meal to someone struggling with hunger.

Most needed food items include: dried/canned beans or lentils, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and tomato pasta sauce, peanut butter, canned fish/meat, oatmeal, baby formula/cereal and food. Food donations can be dropped off at any local fire hall.

Financial donations can be made easily and securely online by clicking the ‘Donate’ button at the top of this page.

Five donations families are thankful for during Thanksgiving

Families across Toronto are relying on your unwavering support this Thanksgiving. Donations fall during the summer and we need your help to stock the shelves during the Thanksgiving Drive.
Daily Bread Food Bank’s Thanksgiving Drive begins on September 21. Help make this holiday easier for people who are struggling to make ends meet.

Here are the top five donations Daily Bread needs. Drop off your non-perishable food donations at your local fire hall.

1) Canned fish or meat
What’s so special about canned fish or meat? For starters, they are non-perishable and high in protein. The best thing about canned fish or meat is that it’s already cooked and requires little preparation. This saves energy and time.

2) Peanut butter
Peanut butter is simple and it works! It’s a good source of protein and healthy fats. Much like tuna, peanut butter is quick and easy to use. Peanut butter’s versatility makes it a good addition to breakfast and snacks. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s tasty.

3) Rice
Rice is a good source of calories and is a great accompaniment for vegetables, meats and alternatives. Rice is a fuel source that helps us navigate our daily lives. For those who are struggling, rice can help complete their meals and ensure they don’t go hungry.

4) Pasta
Pasta (especially whole wheat or high-fibre varieties) is a reliable source of energy. It also means pasta disappears quickly at food banks – everyone needs it.

5) Eggs and dairy
These two foods are difficult to access for those struggling. They have a short shelf life and as such, are difficult to donate. Cash donations allow Daily Bread to buy these products and distribute them without worrying about whether they have spoiled. Both of these are especially crucial for families with children.

Did you know that half of what Daily Bread distributes to local food bank is fresh? We use your financial donations to purchase food like eggs, yogurt, milk, carrots, apples and onions. You can donate online at www.dailybread.ca to help us purchase and distribute perishable foods like this.

Daily Bread Food Bank’s Thanksgiving Drive begins Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Let’s give back to our community! To make a monetary donation please click here.
