Volunteer Opportunities
From Public Food Sorting Days during our annual drives, to coming in when you have some extra time to dedicate to volunteering, many opportunities exist to help Daily Bread support its member agencies and clients. All volunteers must be scheduled in advance so please take a look at our current and on-going volunteer opportunities and get in touch!
Current Volunteer Opportunities
June 21, 2010: Please note that if you are a group looking to volunteer, Daily Bread will only be booking groups of people to a maximum of 20 for the summer. This is due to a lack of donated food available to be sorted.
Advocacy program at Daily Bread
The Advocacy Program at Daily Bread provides information, referral and advocacy support to food bank clients both at the Advocacy Resource Centre at Daily Bread’s 191 New Toronto Street location, as well as at local member agency food banks throughout the GTA. Those with an interest in learning more about community resources, or who have experience in social service, community work or a related field are encouraged to apply.
This volunteer program requires approximately five to six training sessions which will prepare you to provide food bank clients with information, referral and support in diverse areas, including housing and legal issues, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support program and providing assistance to newcomers. There is a minimum time commitment of six months and one shift per month. Evening and weekend shifts may be available. For more information, please email Advocacy Program volunteers with your resume, availability, contact information and Advocacy Program in the subject line.
Ambassador Program
The Ambassador Program is an exciting part of our volunteer program at Daily Bread Food Bank. It allows individuals to share their passion for raising awareness of the issues surrounding hunger and poverty in our city. Ambassadors will assist Daily Bread by acting as a sole Daily Bread representative at selected 3rd party events to gratefully accept financial donations on Daily Bread's behalf, and speak on behalf of Daily Bread Food Bank. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador please email tamar@dailybread.ca with Ambassador Program in the subject line.
On-Going Volunteer Opportunities
Whether you are an individual, a school group, looking for a corporate team-building activity, or a way to give back, there are many opportunities to get involved at Daily Bread such as:

- Order picking: preparing the weekly food orders for our member agencies
- Bulk food processing: re-packaging bulk food items like beans and rice
- Fundraising
- Administrative work: data entry, mail preparation

Most shifts for the volunteer opportunities below are during Daily Bread’s business hours. There is morning (9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) afternoon (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) or full day shifts (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Individual
New individual volunteers who are interested in volunteering with Daily Bread must come to our location at 191 New Toronto Street to register. Volunteer shifts are scheduled in advance. To schedule your shifts, please come in at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on how to volunteer as an individual, please contact bree@dailybread.ca with Individual in the subject line.
Groups - Schools/Youth/Special Needs
Daily Bread offers exciting hands-on educational workshops at our New Toronto Street location. Our workshops include a tour of the facilities and hit on a number of topics relating to food bank use and creating social change. Workshops assist youth and young adults in understanding causes of poverty and how they relate to our community. As part of these opportunities, a volunteering component can be added so that youth put new knowledge to action immediately. For more information, please email rachel@dailybread.ca with Groups - Schools/Youth/Special needs in the subject line.
If you are a high school student looking to volunteer as an individual to fulfill your volunteer requirement hours (instead of with a school group), please contact bree@dailybread.ca with High School Volunteer Requirement in the subject line.
