Agency Spotlight: Toronto Council Fire

Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre (TCFNCC) is an Indigenous Daily Bread Member Agency that has been serving the Downtown Toronto community for over 24 years! They are committed to the health, safety, and well-being of their clients, and work to provide counselling, resources, and other basic needs that encourage personal growth and foster spiritual and cultural identity.

Since 1976, TCFNCC’s work has been guided by the use of their good minds to work toward peace, harmony, and friendship. What started as a small group of people recognizing the increasing numbers of Indigenous people gravitating to the downtown core led to the creation of the Gathering Place.

Open 365 days of the year, the Gathering Place has become a place for all to meet with friends, have a coffee, and access resources like information on affordable housing, and support services like their food and clothing bank. All while finding ways to access cultural programming for every member of the family, honouring each stage of life.

Many families in Regent Park and surrounding communities live in precarious living circumstances and experience the effects of intersectional determinants of health, all of which has been exacerbated by COVID-19. Over this past year, Toronto Council Fire has seen a dramatic increase in the number of new clients with families accessing their services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They currently provide over 109,200 meals annually, and are constantly learning new ways to adapt and deliver programs and services in a safe, meaningful, and engaging way

In 2020-2021, Toronto Council Fire has invested (and continues to invest) in their local community in the following ways:

  • Delivering 65 hampers/weekly to seniors who are housebound (3,380 hampers/annually)
  • $90,000 in Emergency Housing Supports
  • $18,000 geared toward rent relief for families struggling on a low-income

June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate and honour the heritage, contributions, and culture of Indigenous communities across the country. Daily Bread Food Bank also recognizes our obligation to proactively engage in the work towards healing and reconciliation.

Daily Bread is proud to support the wonderful work of Toronto Council Fire, and we are grateful to work along aside them as they ensure everyone has access to the food and resources they need during the most difficult times.
