Child Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation

Before COVID-19, one in four children accessing food banks went hungry according to their guardian. During the pandemic, this number increased to one in three. School closures also meant that many young people were unable to access nutrition programs for the entire year. While this is alarming, there is a Daily Bread agency working to combat this.

The Yonge Street Mission Evergreen Centre for Street Involved Youth is an inclusive, comprehensive centre for at-risk youth in our city. Their wide range of services and programs are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of youth aged 16 to 24.

Every year they serve thousands of young people experiencing food insecurity, mental health strugglesinadequate housing, and challenges in school. They have no one to trust and are doing the best they can to survive.

The Evergreen Centre fosters safe spaces and provides drop-in meals, access to physical and mental health services, employment services, and housing, in hopes of providing Toronto youth the opportunity to thrive.

Daily Bread is proud to support the wonderful work of our agency network, ensuring that everyone, especially our youngest, most vulnerable community members, has access to the food and resources they need.
