Webinar – How Do We Make Food Banks Obsolete?

Following the release of a new report from The School of Public Policy, University of Calgary, on the link between government policies and food bank use, Daily Bread Food Bank hosted a webinar panel discussion on Wednesday, March 30, to learn how we can make food banks obsolete.

The report found that the number of food bank visits directly rises with increases in rent and falls with increases in minimum wage or disability benefits available to individuals requiring social assistance.

Although food banks are designed to provide emergency food relief, food insecurity cannot be outsourced to charity.  All levels of government have a responsibility to enact policies that will help to build economic and social resilience and ensure the right to food for all individuals through decent work, affordable housing, and a strong social safety net.

Our panelists included:

  • Co-Author of the Report, Dr. Ron Kneebone, Scientific Director of Social and Health Policy, School of Public Policy, University of Calgary
  • Deena Ladd, Executive Director, Workers’ Action Centre
  • Chiara Padovani, Chair, York South Weston Tenant Union
  • Garima Talwar Kapoor, Director, Policy and Research, Maytree

And a special thank you to our food bank clients, John, Mia and Weenee, who shared their lived experiences and discussed the realities of living with food insecurity.

We are very grateful to our moderators, panels, and everyone who joined us for this conversation.
