On Tuesday, April 15, Daily Bread staff and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in the early morning for a special ceremony to mark the arrival of two new straight trucks and a tractor unit made possible as part of a $2 million gift from the Church last year.
These greatly needed vehicles will support Daily Bread’s growing operations, enabling us to deliver food to 205 programs across Toronto. Every day, they will carry tens of thousands of pounds of food, providing critical support for the more than one in ten Torontonians who rely on emergency food access.
Elder David LaFrance, an Area Seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ontario, said a few words to dedicate the trucks to the essential work ahead. “We are so grateful to walk shoulder to shoulder with Daily Bread in this great effort to provide relief to God’s children here in the Toronto area,” he said.
Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington reflected on the significance of the moment: “These new trucks are not just vehicles—they are vessels of compassion, hope, and community. They’ll help ensure that no matter where someone lives in our city, support is never too far away.”
Over the past few years, the Church has generously contributed more than $2.5 million to Daily Bread through financial support and community initiatives like the Light the World Giving Machines, vending machines set up over the holidays where shoppers could choose to donate items like a breakfast for a child, hot meals, and more to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
We are deeply grateful for this partnership and for the shared commitment to ending hunger in our city. With these trucks on the road, we are one step closer to a Toronto where everyone’s right to food is realized.
