How to apply for the Canada Disability Benefit

The federal Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is now here! Applications opened on June 20, 2025.

The CDB is a new monthly benefit designed to reduce poverty among low-income, working-age persons with disabilities.

We put together this guide to show who is eligible for the benefit and how to apply. Read on to find out more.

What makes you eligible for the CDB?

  • You are between the ages of 18 and 64.
  • You have the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
  • You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, filed your 2024 federal income tax return.
  • You are a Canadian resident.
What if I don’t have the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?
  • The DTC is a federal income tax credit that helps lower taxes for people with disabilities.
  • If you don’t have the DTC, you can apply for it by filling out this application form.
  • A medical practitioner must complete part of the application form.
  • For more details on DTC eligibility and how to apply, visit the Government of Canada website.
How much can I expect to receive from the CDB?

You may receive up to $2,400 per year ($200 per month). The amount depends on several factors, including your income, marital status, employment, and other considerations. Visit the government website to use the CDB Estimator Tool and find out how much you might receive.

What do I need in order to submit my CDB application?

If you have the Disability Tax Credit and meet all the other eligibility requirements, you should receive a letter in the mail with a six-digit code to apply.

  • Along with this six-digit code, you’ll also need your Social Insurance Number (SIN), mailing address and banking information (branch number, institution number and account number).

If you didn’t receive a letter, you can still apply.

  • In this case, in addition to your Social Insurance Number, mailing address and banking information, you’ll also need your net income amount (line 23600 on your 2024 Notice of Assessment).
How do I apply?
