Celebrating National Volunteer Week and the people who make our work possible

At Daily Bread Food Bank, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.

Every box packed, every item sorted, every meal prepared and every welcoming smile helps ensure people across Toronto can access the food they need with dignity. During National Volunteer Week, we are proud to celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy and care to support our neighbours.

Throughout the week, Daily Bread is showing our appreciation in a variety of ways, including a special volunteer celebration and awards event, prizes and giveaways, and onsite massages offered by Colette Sloan and her team of Registered Massage Therapists.

At this week’s celebration, we recognized the dedication, compassion and community spirit of Daily Bread volunteers. The room was filled with people from all walks of life — students, retirees, newcomers to Canada — many of whom are long-time supporters who simply want to make a difference.

As Alison, Manager of Volunteer Services at Daily Bread, shared during the event, “Volunteers are the secret sauce at Daily Bread. You bring care, energy and connection to this work every day — and you help build a sense of community that extends far beyond the time you spend here.”

Volunteers support Daily Bread in countless ways, from sorting and packing food in the warehouse, to helping in the kitchen, supporting community food programs, assisting with administrative work, and creating a welcoming environment for everyone who comes through our doors. Their impact is felt every day by people and families across Toronto.

This year, we recognized volunteers who reached significant service milestones, including five, 10 and 15 years of dedicated volunteer service. A special congratulations to Betty Anne, Ethel and Milina, who were honoured for 15 years of service. Their long-standing commitment is an extraordinary example of what it means to show up for community year after year.

We also celebrated volunteers who contributed 200 or more hours over the past year. This year’s top hours recognition went to Jessica, who contributed an incredible 1,693 volunteer hours, and Augustina, who generously gave 1,635 hours.

These milestones represent more than numbers. They represent meals reaching families, shelves being stocked, food being sorted and moments of care shared across our community.

As Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington shared, “The impact of our volunteers reaches across the city. Every day, tens of thousands of people benefit from your work — and I hope you know that the time you give makes an incredible and meaningful difference.”

As Daily Bread continues to respond to record levels of need, volunteers remain essential to our mission.

To every Daily Bread volunteer: thank you. Your time matters. Your care matters. And your commitment is helping build a city where everyone’s right to food is realized.
