Coming together to strengthen Daily Bread’s member network

As food insecurity continues to rise across Toronto, Daily Bread Food Bank’s 2026 Member Agency Conference created space for our network of 144 member agencies to come together, learn from one another, and strengthen the services that support thousands of neighbours across the city.

Held on Thursday, May 14, the conference brought together staff and volunteers from Daily Bread’s member agency network for a full day of learning, connection, and practical skill-building. The day opened with remarks from Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington, followed by a keynote from Angela Robertson, Executive Director of Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre, whose work has long centred people and communities facing poverty, discrimination, and marginalization.

Throughout the day, participants took part in workshops focused on the realities agencies are navigating every day — from good governance and accessibility to advocacy, harm reduction, client-centred service, and peer learning. Sessions explored how agencies can create more inclusive spaces for clients with disabilities, support people with dignity, understand harm reduction approaches, and use advocacy to push for the policy changes needed to address the root causes of hunger.

The conference also highlighted the strength and innovation within Daily Bread’s network. Through the Food Bank Showcase and Peer Learning Fair, agencies shared real-world examples of how they are adapting to meet the needs of diverse communities, manage growing demand, and improve service delivery.

Delivering the closing remarks was Rev. Gerlyn Henry, incumbent of the Church of the Holy Wisdom, whose parish operates the Holy Wisdom Food Bank. She concluded the day’s learning by underscoring the profound impact of addressing food insecurity through dignity, compassion, and inclusion.

In a message to attendees, Charles Jergl, Vice President, Programs and Services, acknowledged the increasing pressure on staff and volunteers, noting that agencies are responding not only to hunger, but also to housing instability, health challenges, and deepening inequities.

At its heart, the Member Agency Conference was about connection — sharing knowledge, building relationships, and imagining how, together, Daily Bread and our member agencies can continue offering clients the best possible support. As need continues to rise, this kind of collaboration is essential to ensuring everyone can access the nutritious food they need with dignity.
