Honouring National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month — a time to recognize and honour the histories, cultures, leadership, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

It is also a time to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonialism and the role we all have to play in reconciliation. Indigenous Peoples have cared for the lands and waters now known as Canada since time immemorial. Their knowledge, traditions, advocacy, and leadership continue to shape communities across the country, including here in Toronto.

This month invites all of us to keep learning — not only about history, but about the strength, diversity, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities today.

On June 21, we also recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day, which falls on the summer solstice. For many Indigenous communities, the summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

At Daily Bread Food Bank, we are proud to support member agencies that serve and empower Indigenous communities across Toronto. In addition to providing access to food, many of these agencies offer vital programs rooted in culture, connection, wellness, counselling, housing support, and community care.

Reconciliation requires more than recognition. It calls on us to listen, learn, amplify Indigenous voices, and support Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives — during National Indigenous History Month and throughout the year.

As we mark National Indigenous History Month, we encourage our community to take time to learn, attend local events, support Indigenous-led organizations, and reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in meaningful and ongoing ways.
