Young Chefs Make Meals for Families Facing Food Insecurity

Our commercial kitchen at Daily Bread Food Bank was abuzz with sounds of joy and laughter on May 26, 2023 as fifty young chefs, age 12 and under, came together to prepare over 1,100 nutritious meals for families facing hunger in our city.

Get Fed Up, an exiting event in support of Daily Bread, was brought together by Julian Pancer, of The Chef Upstairs and Shai Mandel, President of Rooks to Cooks, a culinary school for youth.

Hosting the event was renowned TV personality, John Catucci of the Food Network!

Using industrial size mixers bowls and steamers, the junior chefs prepared delicious meals filled with hearty mashed potatoes, carrots and chicken and gained new culinary skills along the way. “I learned that it’s important to use ice to stop the beans from cooking when they’re done,” gleamed one of the students proudly.

But new cooking techniques were not all they learned through this impactful event. Each participant was required to submit a video on the significance of fighting food insecurity and why they felt it is important to ensure that everyone has access to the food they need.

Showing that deep empathy for our neighbours can be learned at any age, everyone who took part in this event made a positive impact on our community! In addition to the meals prepared, Get Fed Up raised over $17,000 that will go directly to supporting Daily Bread’s essential food programs.

We are so grateful to everyone involved in bringing this initiative to life. And we hope to see these young chefs in our kitchen again very soon!
