Katie and Kate Hike the Appalachian Trail to Help Fight Hunger

For Katie and Kate, hiking has long been part of their lives. They grew up in families that loved the outdoors, and over the years, time on the trail became more than exercise. It became a way to reflect, connect and challenge themselves. Now, they are taking on sections of the Appalachian Trail — turning a shared love of hiking into a powerful way to help fight hunger.

Their journey is rooted not only in a love of being active, but also in a desire to make a meaningful impact. “We realized it needed to be about something bigger than just us,” Kate said. “It wasn’t enough just to have a goal to finish the hike.”

On past hikes through the Appalachian region, Katie and Kate witnessed poverty up close. At the same time, they were thinking about the growing food insecurity they see here in Canada. “I’m bothered by the amount of food insecurity in our own country,” Kate said. “I don’t get how people can afford the food to feed their families.”

Their decision to support Daily Bread was deeply intentional. “Every dollar has to matter,” Katie said.

That belief is what led them to Daily Bread. After researching Canadian charities, they decided to support an organization they saw as fiscally responsible, high-impact and deeply committed to addressing an issue they care deeply about: food insecurity.

Their fundraiser is also a reminder that giving back can take many forms. Whether it is hiking the Appalachian Trail, taking on a personal challenge or organizing an event, turning something meaningful into an act of generosity can inspire others to get involved.
