More Volunteers Needed to Meet Record-High Demand

September 16, 2022

In the month of August, Daily Bread’s network of member agencies hit a record high of 182,000 client visits — a staggering threefold increase over the pre-pandemic monthly average of 60,000.

As food-bank use climbs, so does our need for additional volunteers to help prepare meals, sort food donations, pick orders in the warehouse and keep our on-site food bank stocked.

Want to join us in the fight against hunger? Take a look at the wide variety of volunteer opportunities we have available. There is a fit for everyone!

Sort food on the production floor

Production-floor volunteers process and sort donated food items, boxing them up to go out to our member agencies. This involves checking expiration dates and ensuring food has not been tampered with or opened. As you will be working in groups, this is a great opportunity to connect with like-minded community members.

Pick orders in the warehouse

Order-picking volunteers work in our dry goods warehouse, fridge and freezer, using handheld scanners to pick and track food orders for our 189 member agencies. This includes lifting and stacking cases of canned goods and produce bags weighing up to 50 pounds. This is a great opportunity for volunteers looking for a little extra exercise in a fun and friendly environment.
*Extra orientation is required for this position.

Prep meals in the kitchen

Kitchen volunteers assist in preparing hearty, nutritious meals for programs across the city. Responsibilities include chopping and preparing fresh produce and meats, washing dishes and helping to keep our large commercial kitchen tidy. Expect a lively, fast-paced environment with great music blasting. If you’re not able to volunteer during regular business hours, you can help with our Community Meal, served out of the kitchen on Thursday evenings.

Help clients in the on-site food bank

The New Toronto Street Food Bank is the on-site food bank within Daily Bread’s facilities. Volunteer responsibilities here include greeting clients, assisting with checkout and keeping shelves stocked. Solid people skills are a must and command of a second language is an invaluable asset. Shift hours for this position include Saturday options for those who can’t volunteer during the workweek.
*Extra orientation is required for this position
