World Food Day 2026

Today is World Food Day, an event created in 1945 by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization to raise awareness of world hunger.

The numbers are startling: Currently, an estimated 645 million people around the world are living with hunger. Here in Toronto, we see this need in the historic wave of food bank use we’ve been battling since the onset of the pandemic. Last year, we hit a new high of 4.1 million food bank visits, a staggering 340% increase over 2019.

But ending hunger is within reach. This year’s World Food Day theme — “innovate today, nourish tomorrow” — encourages us all to find solutions. In our city, we know the most powerful innovation we need isn’t a new technology. It’s the political will to tackle the root cause of hunger: poverty.

At Daily Bread, our mission is to collaborate with all to eliminate food insecurity, and advocate for solutions to end poverty. Watch the video below to learn more about the changes we’re calling for to reduce food bank lines. We must all take action to ensure that everyone’s right to food is realized.
