A Canadian Student at an American College Gives Back in a Big Way

Eva Wedig, 19, is a Canadian student currently enrolled at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, through the James Graham Brown Foundation Scholarship. Each summer, students apply for funding and are encouraged to embark on a project to enrich not only their own lives, but the lives of others in their communities, and communities around the world.

As the impacts of COVID-19 were felt across the globe, the foundation felt that this year, the focus should be on organizations responding to the pandemic and the money would be in the form of a donation to support their work.

Having had to leave school and move back to Toronto, Eva felt fortunate to have the support of her family and honoured to be able to give back to the Toronto community after so many years abroad.

As a biology student, hoping to attend medical school, Eva began to think of all the ways in which the pandemic was affecting people’s lives. What stood out to her the most was the dramatic increase in food insecurity exacerbated by COVID-19, and what this meant for people’s health and livelihood.

Once she came across Daily Bread Food Bank and our pandemic relief efforts, Eva knew this was where her donation could have the most amount of impact on the people of Toronto.

“I was impressed by Daily Bread’s ability to change the scope of their work to address the needs of the community in such a dynamic way, even before the pandemic hit. They are forward-thinking and looking at solving the root of food insecurity.”

Through her grant proposal, Eva was able to donate $6,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank, which has helped to ensure that those in need have a place to turn to for food.

While Eva’s plans for the future include working with global organizations to address local health care needs, she is excited to continue working with organizations around the world, like Daily Bread Food Bank, to tackle food insecurity and poverty reduction as a global citizen.

On behalf of the team at Daily Bread, the clients we serve, and the agencies we support, thank you, Eva! Your passion and generosity is inspiring, and we are truly grateful for your willingness to give back to your community.
