The impact of community: 2024 Spring Food Sort

This past weekend, over 200 volunteers dedicated their time and effort to ensure that much needed food donations were sorted, packed and prepared for distribution to 132 agencies and 207 food programs across Toronto. Through the collective effort of volunteer support, we sorted an incredible 56,000 pounds of food.

“We are grateful to our wonderful community for providing this support, to ensure that individuals who are currently experiencing food insecurity can get the assistance that they need. Together, we can make a difference,” said Neil Hetherington, CEO, Daily Bread Food Bank.

Joining the day’s volunteer efforts were Premier Doug Ford, Mayor Olivia Chow and Member of Provincial Parliament, Christine Hogarth, who not only provided their support, but also raised awareness about food insecurity in our community. Mayor Chow thanked the day’s volunteers, noting, “We have hope because of your commitment to Daily Bread Food Bank, to ending poverty and ending hunger. All of your support makes a difference.”

In February, food banks across the city served 301,354 client visits. This is a 40% increase compared to the same period last year, and a 136% increase compared to 2022. As the food insecurity crisis in our city continues to impact tens of thousands of Torontonians, we continue to remain hopeful because of your incredible generosity and willingness to create change.

Daily Bread’s spring fundraising campaign runs until April 30. We encourage you to participate in any way you can. Here are a few ways you can help:

  • Use your voice to call for a fully funded Canada Disability Benefit ahead of the upcoming Federal Budget on April 16. This would reduce poverty among people with disabilities and would help make strides in ending hunger in Canada.
  • Drop off non-perishable food items, including canned fish, fruit, vegetables, nut butters and oatmeal, at any firehall or grocery stores in the city.
  • Make a financial donation, which helps to provide emergency food support to those facing hunger.
